Doc Watson

There I was, 16 years old, on my first magazine assignment, sitting next to the most respected flatpicker of all time - Doc Watson, in his trailer, backstage at the Walnut Valley Flatpicking Festival, Winfield, Kansas. He was tuning up with his band. Shortly after he finished I asked him to show me how he played the intro to Tennessee Stud. He barked jokingly " What, so you can steal my licks!" He obliged and showed me how it was done. I haven't see Doc since then, but I am always looking for another opportunity to photograph him .
